The medieval city of Montluçon

The old town wraps around the Château des Ducs de Bourbon, perched on a rocky spur and overlooking the Cher.

A symbolic and imposing fortress

Get some height and admire the panorama offered by the Louis II de Bourbon esplanade. From here you become aware of the importance of the castle and its protective role for Montluçon.

Orientation tables show you the points not to be missed.

The medieval city, huddled around the castle, was protected by powerful ramparts. Flanked by 40 towers, this wall was pierced by 4 gates that allowed access to the city.

The boulevard de Courtais and the boulevard Carnot, which form a complete loop around the historic center, allow you to imagine today the location of the ramparts surrounded by ditches.

At the bend of your walk, you can admire beautiful timber-framed houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, enter the quietness of the Saint-Pierre and Notre-Dame churches or stroll in the shade of the ramparts in the Wilson Garden.

Let yourself be guided

The narrow streets of the medieval city offer a visit full of charm punctuated by magnificent half-timbered houses.

Turn by turn, you will discover the Notre Dame church, the 16th century mansions of the rue de la Fontaine or even the Saint Pierre district, whose church is home to one of the most beautiful sculptures in France: the statue of Sainte-Madeleine, a work classified as a historical monument.

Tour of the square tower

The square tower of the old castle of the Dukes of Bourbon has been redone and re-opened to the public. At first, stop on the balcony all in wood with a magnificent view, then the highlight of the visit is at the top of the tower with a grandiose panorama on Montluçon.
